5 things that GTA 4 did better than any other game in the franchise

5 things that GTA 4 did better than any other game in the franchise

The GTA franchise has rarely ever put a step wrong. No game in the series can ever be discarded as a mediocre entry, which says a lot for a franchise that is this old.

Many often point to GTA 4 when discussing the biggest creative risks and ambitious moves pulled by Rockstar Games within the franchise. This is because GTA 4 ditched the glitz and over-the-top nature of previous games and chose to tell a much more grounded story.

To that end, the game continues to divide fan opinion. However, a major chunk of the fanbase has come to appreciate the game for its creatively ambitious nature.

Here, we take a look at what GTA 4 did better than any other game in the franchise.

#1 A compelling protagonist

It is difficult to deny just how nuanced and compelling Niko is as a character. An immigrant with a checkered and violent past, Niko isn't a man looking for trouble. However, he usually finds himself in hot water.

While that description might sound a bit formulaic, Niko is anything but. The character's writing avoids the trappings of the typical, gruff 2000s protagonist by carefully balancing the brooding with moments of levity.

Having said that, Niko isn't just a melancholic grunt. He also packs a lot of ammunition when it comes to wit and humor. His backstory gives the character a lot of baggage to deal with, and it comes to light in fascinating ways.

GTA 4 benefitted a ton by letting players play as someone who is not familiar with either America or Liberty City. This essentially puts players on the same level as Niko, adding a sense of relatability to the character.

#2 A sense of realism

A player's actions have more consequences in GTA 4 than any other game in the franchise.

The game benefits a ton from having real-world physics attached to every object. A badly-timed turn or brake will send the player's vehicle hurtling down the road and leave Niko badly injured.

Every vehicle in the game has a realistic sense of weight and is grounded in reality. While this was obviously a huge point of contention as it was taking away the apparent "fun" of GTA's open world, it did serve Rockstar's creative vision in a big way.

#3 A grounded storyline

The GTA franchise has always had trouble identifying and sticking to a tone for the length of the entire game. For instance, GTA San Andreas starts out as a story of gang warfare and the loss of family but quickly diverts into one about government conspiracies and city-wide riots.

However, Rockstar stuck to their guns with GTA 4. The game knew exactly what it was trying to convey and how to go about doing that.

There are no pointless detours or disposable characters for the sake of a laugh. The game knows the kind of story it wants to tell and manages to tell it successfully.

#4 More player choice

While far from being an RPG that changes as a result of the player's actions, GTA 4 did make a lot of headway in terms of increasing player agency. At certain points in the story, the player was allowed to make certain decisions that would impact not only the game's ending but the fates of certain characters.

As a result, Niko's story felt more real to players as they were often making a lot of important calls. While GTA 5 certainly requires the player to make a pretty important decision towards the end of the game, Grand Theft Auto 4 does it in a much more subtle way.

#5 A compelling cast of villains

Much like the MCU, the GTA franchise might have a problem when it comes to its villains. Typically, every game in the series will have multiple villains in place of one bad guy at the end of the game.

While that approach suits gameplay, as it usually signifies the player is evolving and meeting bigger threats, it doesn't make for great storytelling.

Grand Theft Auto 4 does something similar but ties it up in an organic way so it isn't as jarring.

One of the biggest reasons why GTA 4's villains stand out among the rest is the fact that their actions can be justified. Even someone as deplorable as Vlad has a certain level of relatability and charm.

However, the main antagonist, Dimitri Rascalov, is simply one of the best-written villains in the series and showcases just how far Rockstar has come in terms of their writing.

Call of Duty 2021' Current Title, Developer, Settings, Other Details Massively Leaked

Call of Duty 2021' Current Title, Developer, Settings, Other Details Massively Leaked

KEY POINTS

"Call of Duty 2021" is rumored to release this year

Apparently the game would be called "Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard"

Activision has not yet said anything about the next "Call of Duty" installment

The title and the settings of the next "Call of Duty" installment are leaked online recently, seemingly hinting that "Call of Duty 2021" might be a direct sequel to 2017's "Call of Duty: WWII" game.

Latest "Call of Duty 2021" Leaks

According to industry insider ModernWarzone, the next game's current title is "Call of Duty: WWII Vanguard." The insider said that the name could be a code name but could also be the game's official title. The leaks also confirm that Sledgehammer Games got another shot at redemption and reportedly in charge of its development.

According to the insider, "Call of Duty 2021" will have an impact on "Call of Duty: Warzone." Players will reportedly see assets and weapons shared with the hit battle royale title. Apparently, ModernWarzone is pretty confident of its source. Earlier leaks suggested that the incoming "CoD" installment will have its plot set in the 1950s.

World War II concluded in 1945, so it is interesting to see what Sledgehammer will introduce in the game's setting given the conflicted timeline. However, ModernWarzone claims that "Call of Duty 2021" might be set in an alternate timeline where the war waged a lot longer. There is a high chance that the upcoming title would deal with the events directly following the Second World War.

Other leaks suggested that the game might feature the Korean War. This is another conflicting timeline since the infamous war took place years after World War II.

Release Date And Other Details

"Call of Duty 2021" is scheduled to release in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Charlie Intel. The upcoming "Call of Duty" installment is rumored to feature an integrated free-to-play "Warzone" at launch. There is no official word as to when exactly the much-awaited title would be announced as of press time.

Rumors have it that Activision might do the official announcement and unveiling sometime this summer. Based on the game publisher's reveal pattern, the announcement usually happens ahead of E3. However, considering that E3 might not be as prominent as it was in the past, the company might opt for the same launch event it did with "Call of Duty: Black OpsCold War" in the previous year

5 best zombie apocalypse mods for GTA 5

5 best zombie apocalypse mods for GTA 5

_____________________________

GTA 5 is popular for allowing players to do whatever they want to do in the game.

Want to cause havoc in the city? Go ahead. Feel like blowing that virtual goon into a million pieces? Fire away. Feeling bored? Get ready for a zombie apocalypse.

Although the game does not feature any exclusive zombie invasion missions, players can always rely on the GTA 5 modding community to surprise them with some over-the-top mods that can turn Los Santos into a land of horror.

Here are some of the best zombie apocalypse mods that make for the ultimate GTA 5 experience.

#5 Zombie Car Park

Image via gta5-mods.com

Image via gta5-mods.comImage via gta5-mods.com

While the virtual world features a number of breathtaking wonders for the player to enjoy, one can't simply take a stroll around the city when a bunch of blood-thirsty zombies are on the lookout for fragile human flesh.

Zombie Car Park hosts a number of powerful, armoured vehicles that players can use to ensure their safety during the much-anticipated and equally feared zombie invasion in GTA 5.

#4 Military Base (Zombie Base)

The Military Base, as the telltale name of the mod suggests, allows players to build their base of operations during the Zombie Apocalypse in GTA 5.

This modded military base hosts a number of well-guarded places that the player can seek refuge in. It also features a devastating RM-10 Bombushka airplane and a car workshop that allows players to equip their vehicles with all the tools they will be needing for the invasion.

Definitely one of the most useful zombie apocalypse mods for GTA 5.

#3 Simple Zombies

Contrary to what the name of the mod may suggest, this is perhaps the most diverse zombie apocalypse mod for GTA 5. It comes equipped with a number of useful features, including a crafting system, a good old inventory, and a number of resources, making for a complete zombie play pack for GTA 5.

#2 The Dead Among Us Project

The Dead Among Us Project is an incredible mode for GTA 5 that fills the bustling streets of Los Santos with living, breathing horror and turns the entire place into an eerie, long-forgotten land, haunted by ancient, blood-curdling creatures. With this mod on, GTA 5 couldn't get any more exciting.

#1 Mad Max Vehicles

Mad Max vehicles has just about everything GTA 5 players could possibly want from a zombie apocalypse mod. From destructive monster trucks, to unexpected infernos to complete chaos and, well, zombies. This mode features an assortment of life-threatening situations and makes for the ultimate Grand Theft Auto experience.

5 features that GTA 6 should borrow from other open-world games

5 features that GTA 6 should borrow from other open-world games

Rockstar Games has been on a roll ever since the release of GTA III back in the early 2000s.

The GTA franchise revolutionized the industry and reinvented the modern AAA game with the introduction of the open-world structure.

The open-world genre has become synonymous with success in the AAA space, but Rockstar is constantly looking to up the ante.

In game development, studios will often look at what their competitors are doing and iterate on that idea. This means studios understand that their games will eventually affect others.

To that end, the next probable sequel in the series, GTA 6, will likely draw inspiration from other games in the open-world genre.

#5 Melee combat - Batman Arkham/ Sleeping Dogs

The Batman Arkham franchise introduced gaming fans to a combat system that would go on to become a staple of the open-world genre.

Rocksteady's original vision of the Batman Arkham combat was more in line with a rhythm-based system a la Guitar Hero. While that does sound a bit iffy, it isn't too far off from what players finally got in Batman Arkham Asylum.

Rocksteady's insanely intuitive and satisfying combat mechanics would be utilized in several games, such as Sleeping Dogs, to great effect.

The combat system is as cinematic as it is gameplay-heavy, making it perfect for open-world games like GTA. The GTA franchise has always struggled to implement a satisfying combat mechanic, but perhaps this could be a game-changer for the series.

#4 Nemesis System - Shadow of Mordor

The Nemesis System has now been patented by Warner Brothers, which is a shame since it is one of the most ingenious mechanics in the genre. However, this doesn't mean that Rockstar can't find ways to utilize the core of what makes the Nemesis System so incredibly satisfying.

Essentially, the Nemesis System gives way to emergent narrative by providing consequence to each enemy encounter. Each loss or victory causes a ripple effect within the Orc Army and allows the player to develop personal rivalries and relationships with each enemy.

A similar mechanic would work for GTA, with the player being able to affect the hierarchy of members in an organized crime family. Dismantling an enemy's operation or forging alliances should be something that the GTA franchise should look towards.

#3 Detailed Interiors - Cyberpunk 2077

Despite Cyberpunk 2077's issues, the game does a lot of things right. For instance, not too many open-world games, not even GTA, have been able to craft interiors that are as detailed and varied as the ones seen in Cyberpunk 2077.

The world of Cyberpunk not only extends horizontally but vertically as well, allowing players to get a good, immersive experience indoors. This allows the player to have a lot of breathing space in terms of gameplay indoors, especially when it comes to enemy encounters.

Detailed interiors also make the game world feel as real as possible, with the player having a ton of things to explore indoors as well as outdoors.

#2 Freedom of approach - Metal Gear Solid V

One complaint regarding the GTA franchise is the restrictive nature of the missions, which is in stark contrast to the open world. Players are usually made to complete missions by following a strict, linear path that can often feel like a totally different game.

One particularly great game that accomplishes and fully realizes the potential of the open world is Hideo Kojima's exceptional Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Instead of keeping the open world and the mission separate from one another, the game was able to marry the two into one cohesive experience.

This means the player could take several different approaches to solve the same problem and complete a mission. For instance, the player could call in an attack chopper to distract the enemy while they sneak into the base.

Taking different approaches to the same mission increases replayability and deepens the gameplay loop.

#1 Morality System - Red Dead Redemption 2 / Mass Effect / inFamous

The morality system was at the core of Red Dead Redemption 2, with its name even implying that the protagonist must go through a certain arc. GTA hasn't typically bothered itself with morality, although the franchise came quite close with GTA 4.

GTA 6 could use some of that morality system as a way for the player to craft their own unique characters as opposed to following a strict arc. Giving the player a choice to either be a good guy, a bad guy or something in between allows for far more player agency.

The morality system is still far from perfect, but if anyone can figure it out, it is Rockstar Games.

GTA 6 release skipping PS4 and Xbox One might not be the end for Grand Theft Auto fans

GTA 6 release

GTA 6 release skipping PS4 and Xbox One (Image: TAKE-TWO INTERACTIVE)

Rockstar Games currently run one of the most popular online games in the UK, and they are also developing what will replace it on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

But while PS4 and Xbox One gamers will miss out on the GTA 6 release date, analysts believe there could be other Grand Theft Auto projects on the horizon.

The next mainline Grand Theft Auto title is not expected to arrive until 2022 at the earliest, meaning that current-gen owners are going to get skipped.

And this will also mean that PS4 and Xbox One gamers never received an exclusive GTA game.

GTA 5 has proven a huge success, and it's hard to believe that it started life on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Add to that the GTA 5 and GTA Online are being enhanced for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, and it looks like a game that will never die.

But even though it has had an extraordinary life cycle, which looks set to continue for at least another 12 months, there is also bad news.

Not only will Rockstar Games launch GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X this year, but it will also start making content exclusively for those platforms and PC.

This was confirmed last year when the Grand Theft Auto team confirmed in a statement: “And for the massive and vibrant community of Grand Theft Auto Online players worldwide, the journey through the ever-evolving, shared world of GTA Online will continue on to the new generation with more new updates including additional GTA Online content exclusive to the new consoles and PC.”

But with GTA 6 and GTA 5 growing further apart from the PS4 and Xbox One, that doesn’t mean there could be a few last-minute surprises.

Industry analysts believe that Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive could start focusing on the famous studios’ back catalogue.

There’s a cracking list of older Grand Theft Auto games that could be remastered by Rockstar Games and there is no reason why something like this would have to be limited to just next-gen customers.

With so many PS4 and Xbox One console owners waiting to upgrade, it would make for the perfect time to release a remastered GTA 3 or GTA Vice City.

GTA Online: Rockstar Games tease The Cayo Perico Heist

There’s no doubt that these games could be made to look seriously upgraded even on older consoles, with a user base of millions ready to indulge in a little nostalgia.

Motley Fool raised the idea of older GTA content being released, reporting this week: “Interest in remastered versions of older GTA titles could be huge.

"Activision Blizzard did a remastered version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign last year that reportedly sold 3.4 million copies, but I believe releases of older GTA titles could sell far more copies.

“Rumors are circulating that Take-Two may already be working on a remaster of GTA 3 (2001) and GTA: Vice City (2002).

GTA 5 Online remains one of the most popular UK titles

GTA 5 Online remains one of the most popular UK titles (Image: ROCKSTAR GAMES)

"A community of fans created their own modded version of GTA 3, which Take-Two recently shut down, fueling speculation that the company has something up its sleeve. Obviously, the fact that fans are going to this much trouble shows that there is high interest in Rockstar Games' catalogue of GTA content.

“With GTA V's player base reaching such a high level, there will be tremendous demand when GTA VI releases. Until then, Take-Two has a great opportunity to generate extra sales by introducing new players to characters and storylines they haven't experienced before.

“The ability of Take-Two to potentially tap into its deep catalogue of content speaks to the long-term value of this top video game company.”

Rockstar Games have only commented on the future of GTA 5 and GTA Online of late, leaving many fans wondering when we will see a GTA 6 release date.

But with such a strong lineup of older titles to pull from, PS4 and Xbox One might still have a few Grand Theft Auto surprises to enjoy.
